About the Game

Old Monterrey is a retro 2D platformer set in an alternate version of Monterrey, a city in northern Mexico known for its mountains and desert landscapes. This game brings a unique blend of pixel-art nostalgia and sci-fi chaos as you take control of a laser-wielding cowboy on a mission to rescue innocent goats from alien invaders.

Each level is handcrafted with love for exploration, verticality, and secret paths. Whether you're leaping across rooftops, diving into underground caves, or navigating rural landscapes filled with futuristic tech, the world of Old Monterrey rewards curiosity and skill.

With intuitive controls and animated parallax backgrounds, the game offers a pure retro experienceโ€”no ads, no subscriptions, just fun. From tight jumps to alien firefights, every second is designed to keep players engaged and immersed.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Development Notes

Old Monterrey was developed using the open-source framework libGDX, written entirely in Java using Android Studio.

Level design was handled using Tiled Map Editor (.tmx format), and sprite work and animations were crafted in PyxelEdit.

The game is inspired by a fictional version of Monterrey, Mexico, imagined as a rural, semi-futuristic town from the 1970s โ€” filled with rustic charm and hints of modern technology like antenna towers and alien tech.

Looking ahead, I hope to develop a sequel set in present-day Monterrey, where the main character returns older, wiser, and still full of energy to continue rescuing goats and facing new extraterrestrial threats.
